Election of the Pitt County Safety Committee.

Martinborough 9th December 1774.

The freeholders of the County of Pitt appeared and agreeable to the Directions of Continental Congress made choice of the following persons to be a Committee for the County Vizt John Hardee 1, John Simpson 2, James Lockhart 3, James Lanier 4, Benjamin May 5, George Evans 6, William Rains 7, Ichabod Simpson 8, James Armstrong 9, Edward Salter 10, Frederick Gibble 11, Peter Revis 12, Amos Atkinson 13, William Bryant 14, William Robson 15, Robert Salter 16, Edwd Williams 17, David Perkins 18, Jno Knowis Jur 19, James Latham 20, James Gorham 21, Joseph Garner 22.

At a Council held at New Bern 24th April, 1775.
Present

Ordered a new Commission of the Peace for the County of Pitt, wherein the names of John Simpson, Robert Salter, Robert Lanier, Daniel Charles Forbes, Lazarus Pearce and Peter Reeves are to be omitted.

Proceedings of the Safety Committee in Pitt County.

Martinborough, 23d August, 1775.
We the subscribers professing our allegiance to the King and acknowledging the constitutional executive power of Government, do solemnly profess and testify and declare that we do absolutely believe that neither the Parliament of Great Britain nor any member or constitutional branch thereof have a right to impose taxes upon these colonies to regulate the internal policy thereof and that all attempts by fraud or force to establish and exercise such claims and powers are violations of the peace Security of the people and ought to be resisted to the utmost, and that the people of this province, singly and collectively are bound by the acts and resolutions of the Continental and provincial Congresses, because in both they are freely represented by persons chosen by themselves and we do Solemnly and Sincerely promise and engage under the sanction of virtue, honor, and the sacred love of liberty and our country, to maintain and support all and every the acts resolutions and Regulations of the said Continental and provincial Congresses to the utmost of our power and abilities. In testimony whereof we have hereto set our hands this 23d day of August, 1775.

Proceedings of the Safety Committee in Pitt County.

Martinborough 9th Sept. 1775.
According to adjournment the Committee meat.
Present: Geo. Evans chairman; John Williams, Richd Williams, Parker Lassee, Richd Moye, Wm Robson, James Lockhart, Robert Grimes, James Lanier, Joel Sugg, Mathew Sturdevent, Edd Moore, Peter Reeves, Henry Williamson, George Falkner, Thos. Woolfend, Henry Ellis, Archd Adams, John Bowers, Geo. Moye, Allen Sugg.
Ordered, That John Tyson Esq, meat the next sitting of Committee to answer The Different Allegations lodged against him and that James Lanier write said Tyson to Inform him of next meeting.

Ordered, George Williams appointed in place of John Hardee, Junr, Pattaroler, Thos. Slaughter, Benj. King, Isaac Hardee, son of Robert.

Ordered, That John Hardee, Junr, appear Before this Committee next meating to answer a complaint lodged against him. To appear next meeting.

Ordered, That no Person act in any Publick Cappasity without signing the Association.

Proceedings of the Safety Committee in Pitt County.

Martinborough, Monday 2nd October, 1775.
The Committee met this day aforesaid according to adjournment.
Resolved, That the Chairman agreeable to a Resolve of the provincial Convention lately held at Hillsboro, Advertise the free holders of this County to appear at the Court House in Martinborough on the third Tuesday in October, then to elect any number of persons not exceeding five to represent this County the next provincial Congress, and also at the same time to elect twenty-one or more Proper Persons to act as a committee of said County for the ensuing year.

Whereas John Tison who has acted in many instances prejuditially to the Just Rights of America being called upon by this Committee to answer for his conduct in that Respect hath Exhibited the following confession as his own acts and Deeds viz,
I John Tison of my own free will and consent do sware on the Holy Evangelist that I will not hereafter, Directly or Indirectly do anything that shall be injuriously to my Country knowingly or willingly, and that I am willing to conforme to the Association as far as I have seen, that is now in this County. All this I do sware in the true faith of a Christian—so help me God.
