To all to whome these presents shall come I John Lock, of Brunswick, late of Bladen County, and Mary Locke my wife, send a Greeting. Whereas we the said John Locke and Mary Lock of Brunswick County in the State of North Carolina above written, for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred pounds lawfull money of the aforesaid state, to us in hand paid or Secured to be paid by Nathaniel Reeves, & Zachariah Butler of Bladen County and State of No Carolina above Written the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged ourselves to be therewith fully Satisfied contented & paid and of every part & parcel thereof. And thereof do clearly and absolutely acquit exonerate and forever discharge the said Nathaniel Reeves, & Zachariah Butler their heirs and assigns forever. By these presents have given granted bargained sold, alienated (sic aliened), enfeoffed conveyed & confirmed assigned and set over, and by these presents do give grant bargain Sell alien enfeoff convey and confirm assign and set over unto the said Nathaniel Reeves and Zachariah Butler, these tracts or parcels of land in Cumberland County on or near the Lower Locks Creek, or its drains and in the State above written on the No E side of the No. W River, One tract or parcel Beginning at a stake in John Blocker's lower line, back or lower side of said creek, Barbary Blocker's upper back corner, and runs thence with her line So 17 E 31 Chain 463 links to Benjamin Cooper's line, with it No 73 East 24 chain and 41 links to a pine, near or in Evans' line, then as it (sic?) No 20 E 17 Chain & 40 links, then No 17 W 16 Chain and 60 links to or near Blocker’s line; then with it to the Beginning containing by estimation One hundred acres more or less which said Land was patented by William Farmer Ano Domini 1770 and from him by deed bearing date 16th August 1779 the same was conveyed to John Green blacksmith, and from the said John Green the said land was to me conveyed by deed bearing date the 25 Aug 1780, which said deed is registered in the Registers office of Cumd County in Book G, Folio 51. The second tract or parcel of Land hereby intended to be conveyed is the upper back part of 400 acres formerly patented by Barbary Blocker, and from her and her husband, John Martinleer, was conveyed to Michael Blocker, Junr., and from him conveyed to John Huffman, and from the said Huffman the said Land was conveyed to George Cooper, then from the said George Cooper the said Land was conveyed to William Farmer, & from the said Farmer the said Land was conveyed to John Green, the same was to me conveyed by deed bearing date the 16th of Aug 1779. Registered in the Registers office of Cumbd County in Book G page 51. Which said tract or parcel of land Begins at a Stake in one of Ashe's line and runs thence No 75 E 32 Chs and 40 links to the back line of the aforemend 400 acres, then No 15 W 18 Chs to John Blocker's line, then with the said Blocker’s line So 75 W, 58 Chns --- (page frayed and unreadable) line, thence along said Line to the Beginning contg eighty acres by estimation, more or less. The third tract or parcel of Land hereby intended to be granted, is on and near the Main Road lower side of said creek, being part of a tract of 640 acres granted to Peter Shaver by his Magis. (sic?) or Settlers patent bearing date the 2nd of March 1754. Beginning at a Gum the said in Shaver's corner, and runs thence No 30 W 120 pole to a red oak, then So 60 W 200 pole to a Gum, then So 30 E 120 pole to a pine, then North 60 East to the Beginning Containing by estimation one hundred & fifty acres, be the same more or less which said parcel of Land was conveyed from the aforesaid Peter Shaver to William Farmer, by deed dated 8th of May 1754, Registered in the Registers office of Bladen County in book E, page 47 after being Recorded April Court 1758. Then the said 150 acres of Land was conveyed by the said W. Farmer to Nathaniel Reeves by deed dated 5th of April 1779 and from the said Nathaniel Reeves, the same was to be conveyed by deed dated 18th of Sept. 1780. X X X
To have and to hold the aforesaid three tracts or parcels of Land with all the privilege of ponding as much Water on John Blocker’s land as Shall be necessary to support a Sufficient head of Water for a saw mill at Farmer’s old mill seat, which I hereby promise to obtain leave for from the aforemed John Blocker in writing from under his hand and seal, and with all other privileges to the aforesaid three tracts of Land belonging or in any wise appertaining with every privilege and appurtenance thereof to them the said Nathaniel Reeves and Zachariah Butler their heirs and assigns forever & that free and clear of and from all manner of incumbrances whatsoever, excepting the further duties thereon after to become due to be paid by the said Nathaniel Reeves or Zachariah Butler their heirs and assigns forever. And further I the said John Lock the aforesaid three tracts of Land, containing by estimate Three hundred & thirty acres with all its privileges & appurtenances will forever Warrant and defend hereby against me my heirs Execr, Adminrs, or assigns and against all and every other person & persons whatsoever to the only proper use benefit & behoof of the aforesaid Nathl Reeves & Zachr Butler their heirs and assigns forever, and further I hereby oblige myself my heirs, execrs. or admins. at any time or times hereafter at the instance request cost and charges in the Law of the aforesaid Nathl Reeves & Zach Butler their heirs or execrs. to sign, seal and deliver any such then deed or deeds as shall or may be reasonably devised advised or required by his or their counsel learned in the Law, for the further assurance and better confirmation of the premises aforesaid unto them the said Nathaniel Reeves, & Zachariah Butler their heirs and assigns forever. In Witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands & Seals this 25th day of April in the year of our Lord 1785 and in the eighth year of our Independence.
