There are many references to this James as "Deacon" James Reeve in A history of Mattituck, Long Island, N.Y.. The following is also from that publication in reference to minutes of the Lower Aquebogue Church from April of 1747: “James Reeve, Esq., was the eldest son of Capt. James Reeve, was then a man of 40 years, and succeeded his father and grandfather on the Furrier (sic Purrier) property. The Mary Reeve mentioned later was his wife, Mary Hudson, the daughter of Robert Hudson, Esq., of East Hampton.”

This James and his father may be the James Reeve Junior and James Reeve who witnessed a deed between Matthias Corwin and Thomas Terrel in 1724. However, if it is, this likely indicates this James was born earlier than 1709 as his headstone implies.

James appears on a list of freeholders in Suffolk County in 1737.

In 1762, Isaac Hubbard Jr sold some land to James in the manor of St George's on the south side of Peaconneck River.

James wrote his will on 20 May 1768. It was proved 10 May 1781. He mentioned his wife Mary and sons James, Isaac, Selah and Ebenezer.

Mary wrote her will on 29 Jan 1782 and it was proved 11 Jun 1782. In it she mentions:
  • my Grandchild Mary Reeve
  • my son Ebenzer Reeve
  • my Son in Law John Gardiner and to my Son in Law William Corwin

James and Mary were buried at the Mattituck Presbyterian Church in Suffolk County. His headstone reads: "In Memory of/Deacon/James Reeve,/who died/April 27th 1781./Aged 72 Years/& 2 Days." His wife's headstone reads: "In Memory of/Mrs Mary/Reeve widow/of Deacn James/Reeve Deceased/who died/May 21 AD 1782/Aged 73 Years."
