Although James Green Reeves, born circa 1827 was previously believed to be a child of James Reeves' marriage (undocumented) to Rebecca Lumpkin, an 1823 York County SC deed by William Wright to his daughter Avia Reeves, wife of James Reeves, establishes that James Reeves was married to Avia Wright prior to 1823.

Several of the sons of Frederick Reeves, James, Hiram and Samuel, appear to have left York County, South Carolina shortly after the 1830 US Census and migrated to Obion County, Tennessee. By 1840 the same three Reeves individuals are recorded in Obion County, Tennessee in that census and again in 1850. By the 1850 census Samuel Reeves appears to have died and his wife Jane is listed as the head of household.

From the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, July Court 1835, of Obion County, Tennessee (Page 245).
This day a petition from sundry citizens of Obion County was presented to the court, praying that a road may be opened or a jury of view appointed to view out a road from Troy to the Reelfoot Lake as near a place called Davidson's Camp, to run near the present trail to said part as convenient. It is therefore ordered by the court that James Reeves, Hiram Reeves, William Hutchinson, John L. Bartlett, George W. Cunningham, Richard Hill and Daniel Waling be appointed a Jury of view to view out and lay off said road, and that they report to the next term of this court.
