Narrative

Miles Reeves's descendants believe that he was a son of Jordan Reeves Sr.  DNA analysis has shown that this is not the case. DNA analysis has shown a close relationship to a man who is descended from Reuben Hatcher, b 1770 SC. The DNA of this line of Hatchers matches the YDNA of descendants of Thomas Burton of Cobbs as well. What's more, there is no documentary evidence linking Miles Reeves to Jordan Reeves or anyone in his line. Researchers need to look for Hatcher/Burton/Reeves crossing paths possibly in Virginia, North Carolina, or South Carolina to determine how Miles came to acquire the surname Reeves.

The first record we have on Miles REVES is when in Lancaster Co. SC, 8 March 1788, he appeared before John MARSHALL, JP and after being duly sworn, declared on his oath he killed a wolfe in sd County and produced the scalp. (Brent Holcombe, editor, SCMAR, VOL XIV, Fall 1986, #4, "Bounty Certificates For Wildcats And Wolf Scalps, 1787-1789"). This information from researcher and descendant Margaret Harlow.

Miles Reeves and family lived in Christian Co KY which is adjacent to the Tennessee Counties of Stewart and Montgomery. We see Miles in the 1810 census there, but do not find him in 1790 or 1800 anywhere. Some Miles researchers believe that the Miles Rivers found in 1800 Spartanburg SC is Miles Reeves, but that does not seem to be the case. There is also a James Reeves in the 1810 federal census for Christian Co KY, relationship unknown.

Several sons of Miles Reeves came to Independence Co AR (one in 1837 and two about 1844/1845) as did Jordan Reeves Jr who was in Independence County by 1825.  No documents linking the sons to Jordan Reeves or any of his descendants have been found. These two lines of Reeves appear to have lived in different parts of the county.

Many descendents of Miles Reves/Reeves retained the spelling Reves while others switched to Reeves.

It is not known where Miles Reeves was born. His children were born in NC, SC, and  KY. Possibly he lived along the border of North Carolina and South Carolina.
