Narrative

William is listed along with his son Edmund in the 1794 tax lists of Capt. Perry's District in Franklin County NC as William Reaves. At that time, he is listed with no land acreage but from 1792 until 1814 there are numerous deeds recorded in Franklin County showing William as both a grantee and grantor.

This may be William Rieves Jr. who bought some land in Sussex County from Thomas and Winifred Whitfield. It's possible Winifred was his sister Winny.

From Reliques of the Rives:
William Rives was a resident of Albemarle Parish, Sussex county, Virginia, as late as 1774, but removed from that county before 1782, probably following his father to North Carolina. His wife was named Anna, according to the Albemarle Parish Register, which gives the names of two of his children (Rebecca and Smith).

Children of William Rives and Anna:
  1. Rebecca Rives, b. 4 July 1772, Virginia, m. Cade Fels
  2. Smith Rives, b. 22 Sep 1774, Virginia
  3. Edmond Rives, b. c1776
  4. Nathan Rives, b. c1778
  5. Eli Rives, b. c1780

Children of William Rives and Rebecca Freeman:
  1. Patience Rives, b. c1789, Franklin County, NC
  2. Hansel Rives, b. c1791, Franklin County, NC; d. bef 1827; married Elizabeth Elliott
  3. Lucy Rives, b. c1794, Franklin County, NC; d. bef 1827, married William Wilkinson
  4. Nancy Rives, b. c1796, Franklin County, NC; m. John Elliott
  5. Hannah Rives, b. c1805, Franklin County, NC; m. William McConnell
  6. Levi Rives, b. 9 Jun 1806, Franklin County, NC; d. 1882, Iredell County, NC; married Edith Thomas
In his will, William Rives made several bequests to a grandson Ira Rives and granddaughter Rebecca Rives. Rebecca was described as the daughter of his deceased son Hansel but he doesn't indicate who Ira's father was and in a recently discovered document dated Feb. 1836 from the estate file of William Rives regarding the legacy willed to Ira, he is is named as a son of Hansel. Hansel appears to be the only one of his children who predeceased him and was probably the father of Ira as well. It is also noteworthy that Ira named his son Thomas Hansel Reeves.
