Coosa County, AL

History

Coosa County was established on December 18, 1832, formed from parts of Montgomery and Shelby counties. The county was one of 14 counties organized from lands ceded by the Creek Indians in the 1832 Treaty of Cusseta. It was named for the Coosa River, which forms its western boundary. The word "Coosa" is believed to mean "cane-brake" in the Alibama-Kossati Indian dialect.
