Reeves Y-DNA Project Updates - January 2004 [1]

Determining the start of the Reeves DNA Project is a little tricky. Whilst there may have been earlier references, it seems that this message from the then List Administrator, the late Beulah Reeves McCain, was the genesis. A part of that original message notified to the Reeves-L mailing list by Beulah McCain on 27 January 2004 (accessed April 2019) has been reformatted for inclusion here.

We have been very quiet in the last few months. Has everyone given up hope of finding their lines? We all have to pull together. I have worked very hard trying to prove my line of Joel Avery Reeves to his parents and siblings. I have found a few things but would like to have more definite proof.

Plus, I have been very busy with trying to get a new computer set up. Also last fall one of my lists started a DNA program to help identify the lines. The Reeves list has had some discussion of this subject but no one has offered to take it and organize the program. I would like to do it but I don't have the knowledge to do something of that nature. I would be glad to help in any way I can. It would have to be someone that understands the DNA and markers etc.

These are the two studies: Most studies use the father to son base. It costs less than the female line.

  • Y-DNA TESTS
Confirm paternal lineage and common ancestry on the male line.
  • mtDNA TESTS
Trace female lineages of both males and females.
FTDNA also has a new 37 marker test. The 12 marker tests doesn't show a close line but only hundreds of years ago lines would meet. The 25 markers is a better indicator of the lines and how close they might be, the 37 marker has just been introduced to give more information.

I am just bringing this up as it is a good way for lines to be found. But also we need someone that is knowledgeable in this, also someone that could create a web site to post this information. I do know someone that could advise on how to do the web site. Rootsweb also offers the site to post the information.

< .. references to the McCain Surname Project omitted .. >

On the opening page you can access several different site dealing with DNA and one to visit all the known surname web sites that aren't private. This study would be open to all spelling of the name like Reeves, Reaves, Ryves, Rives etc. The spelling of the name may be different but the lines could be very close.

This is just a thought for everyone to ponder.
