Reeves Y-DNA Project Updates - January 2004 [2]

Determining the start of the Reeves DNA Project is a little tricky. The then List Administrator, the late Beulah Reeves McCain, first wrote to the list on 27 January 2004. Her message spurred several others to post messages but the first to mention DNA Testing was from Andrew Gilland on 29 January 2004. She wrote again on 31 January and received response from Barry Reeves.

Originally notified to the Reeves-L mailing list by Andrew Gilland on 29 January 2004, by Beulah McCain on 31 January 2004 and by Barry Reeves on 31 January 2004 (accessed April 2019) and reformatted for inclusion here.

On 29 January 2004, with message subject "Hiram W. Reeves" Andrew Gilland wrote to the list

My gggrandfather Hiram W. Reeves was born in SC abt 1817. He later moved to Butts Co., GA where he married Catherine Roberts and later Susan Harper. Their daughter, Lucinda, was my ggrandmother and married Richard Fincher. They moved to AL before Lucinda was born. I am willing to participate in DNA testing to help establish my line.

Andy Gilland, Midland, TX

On 31 January 2004, with message subject "Re: DNA" Beulah McCain replied to the list regarding Andrew's message

So far you have been the only one to reply about DNA. Another strange thing is Hiram W. Reeves was my fathers name. His middle name was Wyatt and he was born in Atlanta in 1876.

Today is the first time in quite awhile I received anything from the list. Has anyone else experienced this? I thought it might be due to the weather with the ice and snow. Communications interrupted.

Remember that it has to be a blood line from father to son all the way down. I know daughters can do it but it is much harder and involved. It would have to be investigated.

We have to have someone to be in charge of this if there are enough people to participate. Is there anyone that understands the DNA program and would be willing to spearhead it???

Beulah

On 31 January 2004, Barry Reeves then replied to the list regarding Beulah's message as follows

Hi Beulah, I would be very interested in participating in a DNA project. I have thought about it for a couple years now but never followed up on it. I have done a lot of reading on the subject and checked into a couple of the organizations that offer DNA testing for genealogical purposes. I would also be willing to organize and keep track of anyone else who is interested.

I am not sure whether we discussed it before, but the names Hiram and Wyatt were both very common in my Reeves family. They came from the Carolinas in the early 1800's and settled mainly in west Tennessee during the 1840's.

Thanks,
Barry Reeves
