Adams County, OH

History

The history of Adams County properly dates from December of 1790, when the erection of the stockade at the Three Islands on the present site of the town of Manchester began. This was the "pioneer corps" in the Virginia Military Reservation, in the Northwest Territory, and was the beginning of the third permanent white settlement in the State of Ohio. This settlement was begun to protect the border settlements of Virginia and Kentucky from attack during hostilities with Native Americans.

Arthur St. Clair established Adams County on July 10, 1797. He named the county after John Adams, the President of the United States in 1797. It was one of the first four counties created in the Northwest Territory. In 1795, the first permanent white settlement in Adams County was founded at Manchester.

Modern Day Adjacent Counties

Adams County is bordered by Highland, Pike, Scioto and Brown counties as well as the Kentucky counties of Lewis and Mason.
