Narrative

Children of Elizabeth Reeves and Ephraim Jacobs:
  1. William Jacobs, b. 1826
  2. Levi Jacobs, b. 23 May 1828
  3. Matilda Jacobs, b. 1830
  4. Zoa Jacobs, b. 1834
  5. Rachel Jacobs, b. 1836
  6. John Jacobs, b. 1839
  7. Letha L. Jacobs, b. 1841
Elizabeth Reeves and Ephraim Jacobs were married on 7 Oct 1824, in Brown Co OH, per FamilySearch (Ohio County Marriages, 1789-1994):
“This day a license issued to join Ephrian Jacobs and Elizabeth Reeves together in the bonds of matrimony according to law present Daniel Fisher Octr 4th 1824.”
“I David H. Hathaway A Licensed Preacher of the Gospel do hereby certify that on the 7th day of October 1824 I joined together in the Honourable State of matrimony Mr. Ephriam Jacobs and Miss Elizabeth reeves. Given under my hand this 11th day of October 1824. David H. Hathaway E.C.C.”
Elizabeth and Ephraim were still living in Byrd Twp, Brown Co OH when the 1830 census was enumerated. Then, on 20 Aug 1838 Ephraim obtained a grant for 80 acres of land in Adams County IN. From 1840 through 1870, they lived in Adams County IN. After Elizabeth’s death in 1872, the 1880 census indicates that Ephraim was living with his daughter Matilda in Mercer County OH. He may have died there. However, his burial is in Adams County IN.

Factors Suggesting that Elizabeth Reeves was a Daughter of William Reeves (b 8 Apr 1765)
  1. Elizabeth Reeves Jacobs was born ~18 July 1800 (birth date computed from her gravestone in Mount Hope Cemetery, Berne, Adams Co IN; photographed at Find-a-Grave, showing death on 20 Sep 1872 at age 72y 2m 2d).
  2. William Reeves Sr’s 1810 census listing in Fleming Co KY includes an otherwise-unidentified female b 1794-1800. (Although this female was not in William’s 1820 household in Brown Co OH, and Elizabeth Reeves did not marry Ephraim Jacobs until 1824, she would have been 20 years old in 1820 and could easily have been “hidden” in some other household.)
  3. Elizabeth Jacobs’ later census listings consistently indicate KY as her place of birth.
  4. Elizabeth Reeves’ marriage in Brown County OH, where William Reeves lived in 1824 suggests the possibility that he was her father. She and Ephraim were married by an elder in the Christian Church — a denomination with which we have linked the families of both William Reeves and his brother Eli. The 1820 census for Brown County OH shows only four Reeves households: those of William and Eli Reeves and two of Eli’s adult sons.
  5. Five years after Elizabeth Reeves married Ephraim Jacobs, William Reeves’ son John T. married Eliza Jacobs. Ephraim and Eliza Jacobs were siblings, the children of William Jacobs and Sibbell Littell (per trees at Ancestry.com). This suggests the possibility of a possible sibling tie between Elizabeth Reeves and John T. Reeves, as well.
  6. Both Elizabeth & Ephraim Jacobs and Eliza & John T. Reeves had daughters named Zoa.
