Jane Vale REEVES was baptised in November 1811 at the Parish Church of St Marylebone in London Middlesex where her parents are recorded as Israel Reeves and Susannah, his wife.

When Jane was 8 years old. her mother Susannah REEVES died and was buried on 4 August 1820 in the parish of St Mary-Le-Bone, in the county of Middlesex. Jane became an orphan on the death of her father Israel Reeves, who was buried on 13 May 1824 also in the parish of St Mary-Le-Bone, when Jane would have been 13 years old.

On 7 October 1824, Jane’s paternal grandfather, Israel Reeves wrote a new will, in which he named Jane Veal (sic) Reeves. He specifically refers to ” .. seven children and my said grand daughter ..” who receive equal shares. Jane was the only minor named.

On her grandfather’s death in 1828, Jane’s share of his estate was held in trust for her by his executors until she attained the age of 21 in 1832.

In November 1839, at the Parish Church of St Nicholas, Brighton, Jane Vale REEVES marries George COLBY. Both are of full age (Jane would have been 28 years old) and both are resident at 42 Cannon Place, Brighton. Jane is a Spinster and has no rank or profession recorded. She names her father as John (sic) REEVES whose rank or profession was a Wine Merchant.

There are presently no confirmed sightings of Jane and George Colby on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census returns for England and Wales.

On the 1871 census, Jane COLBY, age 58 (sic, 59 expected) appears as a lodger in the household of William and Sarah BENHAM at 13 Bedford Place, Brighton. Jane was born in Marylebone, is a Widow and is described as an Annuitant.
