His mother Rosanna C. Reeves applied for a pension from her son's service in the Civil War. Melzar was in Co. I, 8th Maine Infantry Regiment. Moses was disabled and so Rosanna requested a pension from her son's service.

The testimony stated that Melzar died of smallpox. That he was not married and had no children. The testimony was given in 1864 and states that his father Moses was 52 years old.
