Children of Richard Reeves and Ann Evans:
  1. John Reeves, b. 19 Apr 1838, Kingswinford, Staffordshire, possibly John Joseph Reeves
  2. Joseph Reeves, b. Apr 1841 - d. Feb 1852
  3. James Reeves, b. 13 Sep 1843, Kingswinford, Staffordshire
  4. Mary Ann Reeves, b. c1845
  5. Richard Reeves, b. 13 Aug 1849, Dudley, Worcestershire
  6. Edward Reeves, b. 4 Apr 1852, West Bromwich Southwest, Staffordshire

Richard Reeves was baptized on 29 Sep 1811 at the Parish Church of St Leonard, Bilston, Staffordshire, England. This location agrees with the birth location on the 1851 census. His brother Thomas Reeves is listed directly above him in the parish record and states that Thomas was aged 2 1/2 years. Richard's civil death record indicates he was born about 1809 (based on his age being given as 45 in 1854). Perhaps they were twins and the the age entry in the parish record refers to both. Research Note 3 below.

The marriage of Richard REEVES and Ann EVANS took place in December 1837 at the Parish Church of All Saints, Sedgley, Staffordshire.

The 1841 and 1851 census denotes him as a coal miner. The birth record for son John Reeves mentions that his father was a miner and also names his mother as Ann Evans. The 1851 census states he was born in Bilston, Staffordshire. The death record for Richard Reeves also states he was a miner, aged 45.

Richard was buried at Christ Church, West Bromwich on 29 January 1854 when his place of abode was given as New Town. His age at burial was noted as 42, suggesting his birth was around 1811. See Research Note 3 below.

Research Notes

(1)     The 1841 census list John, age 3, and Joseph, age 2. Joseph's age here must mean 2 months, as he was born 13 Apr of that year according to his GRO Birth Record. Only one of these, "Josh," age 10, is listed in the household in 1851. This would appear to be Joseph. However, the 1861 census for John and Sarah, John's age is given as 24, which would suggest this is the older John. Neither of these agree with the birth date given in John Joseph Reeves's obituary and death certificate.
(2)     According to Lancashire burial records, Ann Reeves, age 78 years, was buried May 9, 1896 in Withnell, Lancaster.
(3)     At this period in time the age in a burial record often seems to be more accurate than the equivalent civil death registration. The civil registration is normally hurriedly done immediately post death, to permit subsequent burial. The informant may distressed, may not have accurate information and is unlikely to be known personally by the Registrar. On the other hand the Minister conducting the burial is more likely to be familiar with the family and may have the time to tease out more accurate information from the grieving family. In this instance, death was the result of an industrial accident and the death was formally notified by the Coroner (probably after a post mortem enquiry) to the Registrar two month after death, adding further opportunities for transcription errors.

It is therefore more probable the baptism register should be taken at face value, with Thomas born in spring 1809 (age 2½ in September 1811) and that our subject Richard was an infant at the time of his baptism, so born August or September 1811.
