Narrative

Sally Reeves was unmarried at the time that her father wrote his will; Joseph Wheatley signed for Sally's portion of her parents' estate in Wilkes County, Georgia, in 1827.

It seems probable that Sally was one of the daughters age 26-45 shown in her mother Hannah's household in 1820. This would be consistent with her marriage to Wheatley between 1820 and 1827. Wheatley, born about 1768 in Delaware, was a widower when he married Sally; the 1830 Wilkes County, Georgia, census shows a female age aged 50-60 (and hence born between 1770 and 1780) in Wheatley's household. If this were Sally, the entry would be consistent with her being in Hannah's household in 1820. She may not have married until after her mother's death, at which time she had reached "middle age" herself. Based on the 1840 census, it would appear that Sally died between 1830 and 1840 and that Joseph had either remarried by 1850 or was living with two unmarried daughters in that year.

The 1830 Wilkes County, Georgia, census showed Joseph Wheatley, age 50-60, with four females aged 20-30 and one female aged 50-60 (probably Sally).

The 1840 Wilkes County, Georgia, census showed Joseph Wheatley, age 70-80. There were no other males in the household, but there were one female, age 20-30; two females, age 30-40; and one female, age 40-50.

The 1850 Wilkes County, Georgia, census showed Joseph Wheatley, age 81, Delaware, with Nancy, age 45, and Sally, age 49, both Georgia natives. While it is possible that the 49 year old female was Sally Reeves Wheatley, her placement in the census does not indicate that she was Joseph's wife, and her age does not correspond with the 1830 census, the closest in time to the 1827 document in which Joseph Wheatley signed for Sally Reeves Wheatley's legacy.

Rsearch Notes

It appears through Ancestry DNA ThruLines DNA Group 2 is related via. daughter Esther Wheatley and her son Simeon Rhodes and his son John Dillard Rhodes and his son Julian G M Rhodes and his son Julian M Rhodes, and to his living child. This needs more research. This would also tend to confirm the belief that Sally Reeves Wheatley's mother was Hannah Rhodes, daughter of John Rhodes and wife of William Reeves.
