Narrative

Children of William Darling Reeves and Virginia Gay:
  1. Docia Reeves, b. March 1871
  2. Manley Furman Reeves, b. 26 June 1882
  3. Maggie L Reeves, b. 1886

Virginia Gay was said to be the mother on Docia Wright's Death Certificate. Mrs. Taylor, a granddaughter, seemed to think she was Manley's mother as well. The census shows Eliza J. Reeves as the mother of house on the 1880 and 1900 censuses. In 1900 she and William are said to have been married for 32 year, putting the marriage about 1868. She is also said to have had eight children, with three living, apparently Docia, Manly and Maggie. Therefore it appears that Virginia Gay and Mrs. Eliza Jane Reeves were the same person. Her death certificate, which lists her as Jennie Reeves, states that the parents were Nathaniel and Margaret Gay. In the 1860 census, Nathaniel and Margaret Gay are shown to have a daughter named Jane, age 8. She is gone by 1870. William doesn't show as married in 1870, as he is listed in J. B. Reeves's household. However, there is a female, J. Reeves listed next door in the Caston household, age 18. So it may be that they had gotten married by then. Thus it is reasonable to conclude that Virginia Gay and Mrs. Eliza Jane Reeves were the same person. It also appears that there were five children who had died by 1900.

Virginia/Eliza Jane Gay was born April 1852 (Census) and died 27 February 1936 in Gills Creek, Kershaw Co., South Carolina (Death Certificate).

This is probably the William who is mentioned in an item from the The Charleston Daily News, 17 Aug 1872:
Mr. Wm. Reeves, of Fork Hill, Lancaster County, was severely wounded last Sunday by the accidental discharge of a pistol in the hands of Mr. Albert Twitty.
