E. N. B. Rieves Dies At Home in Maury
Confederate Veteran Had Been Ill or Three Days
Columbia, Tenn., Sept. 12 - E. N. B. Rieves, a confederate veteran who fought through four years of the War Between the States, died today at the age of 96. He had been ill for three days.
He succumbed at the farm home where he was born July 4, 1839, and had spent his entire life, except for the danger-fraught years of the sixties when he served as a private in the Southern infantry.
He participated in battle at Richmond and Terryville, Ky., the Battle of Chickamauga near Chattanooga, and other engagements near Atlanta.
Mr. Rieves was the oldest Confederate soldier in Maury County. His death left that distinction to Capt. Merritt Tomlinson who is 95 and one of four surviving Confederates in the county. He was also the oldest Mason in the county, having been active in Columbia Lodge for more than fifty years.
The father of six children, all of whom live near here, Mr. Rieves also had thirty grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at the home with Masonic services to follow at the cemetery, a family burial ground.
