Funeral Rites Today for Man Who Shot Himself
Funeral services for Charles Winston Rives, 76, retired building contractor, who police say committed suicide by shooting himself Thursday morning while in a garage at the rear of his home, 2213 Belmont boulevard, are to be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence, conducted by the Rev. H. B. Blue.
Mr. Rives' body was found in the garage shortly after noon, several hours after he had gone there supposedly to amuse himself in a workshop which he had set up, as was his regular custom, according to Emergency Officers Martin Stephens and Dave Beasley. A daughter, Mrs. Lyra Rives Fitzpatrick was said to have told police she became anxious after her father did not return from the garage, and went to investigate. It was then that the apparent suicide was discovered.
The officers said a note was found near the body, signed by Mr. Rives, and directed to an undertaker. The note pertained to funeral instructions, and also directions for disposing of Mr. Rives' personal Jewelry, police said. The officers found a pistol beneath the body and a bullet hole in the right temple.
Mr. Rives was born and reared in Nashville, and was educated in the city schools here. He lived in this city throughout his life. Until about ten years ago he was a building contractor here, and during his early years in this business was in charge of the construction of every small town depot from one end of the Louisville and Nashville railroad to the other.
He was a member of the Corinthian lodge of the Masonic order, and of the Shrine. Early in life, he joined the Carroll Street Methodist church, and until his retirement from active life, took a leading part in affairs of the church. At one time, he was an elder in the congregation.
In addition to his daughter, Mrs. Kirkpatrick, Mr. Rives Is survived by his wife. Mrs. Melissa C. Milliron Rives; one son, Granville Jacobs Rives; one brother, Jesse Rives. Sr, and two sisters, Mrs Oscar Nelson and Mrs Lawrence Darnell, all of Nashville.
