From Reliques of the Rives:
George Wyche Rives was born at Good Hope, Richland District, S. C, June 8, 1827. He was graduated from the University of Alabama, with the degree of B. A. in 1846, and with the degree of M. A. in 1852. He volunteered for duty in the war with Mexico in 1847. The following year he settled in Shreveport, La., where he assumed charge of the Shreveport Gazette and edited that newspaper until 1851. At the same time he taught in a male and female academy until he returned in 1851 to Alabama, where he en gaged himself as a teacher in a female academy at Sandy Ridge. "He was a Christian gentleman," his brother, J. R. Rives, wrote of him, "one of the good of earth. He took the first honors in his class at college. We will meet him and all of our loved ones, that have crossed the river of death, ere long." Mr. George W. Rives married November 6, 1851, Mary Elizabeth Carter, daughter of Ephraim Carter (b. Jan. 14, 1795, at Sullivan, N. H.), and his wife, Mary Ann Fields Dedman, who lived near Lexington, Ky. He died May 29, 1859, m De Soto Parish, La.
