Judge James C. Rives was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and was brought up by his parents near Downey, California, where he received a common school education. After working for a while on the Los Angeles Times, he studied law, and was admitted to the California bar in 1889. In 1898 he was appointed
district attorney, and in 1908 was elected to the Superior Court of Los Angeles county; being assigned to the probate department where he served until his death on January 18, 1924, in Los Angeles. He was a man of the highest integrity; the esteem in which he was held being attested by the fact that he was several times mentioned as a possible candidate for Governor of California.
