From Reliques of the Rives:
James Robert Rives was born in 1794 in Virginia, evidently in Mecklenburg county, "and moved through the Carolinas into Georgia." According to the records of the Bureau of Pensions, he served as a private from February 14 to April 3, 1815, in Capt. E. Moore's Company of Georgia Militia, War of 1812, and from October 5, 1837, to May 11, 1838, in Capt. H. Lyon's Company in the Seminole (Indian) War, having been allowed bounty land for the services rendered. He married some time during the War of 1812, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson (1796-1881). His last years were spent in Talladega county, Alabama, where he died June 29, 1859.

The 1860 Randolph Co., AL, Census, Lineville, HH 1092, showed this family. Sarah Rives was 63, GA, a housewife. Her family included two children, Esther L., 21, GA, and Wililam J., 18, GA. Robert Rives, 65, Miller, NC, was shown, although his name appeared last. In HH 1092 was married daughter Sarah J. Powell, her husband Thomas, and three young Powell children (George W., James M., and Millard F.). Son Thomas E. Rives (shown as Reeves) was living in nearby Wesobulga District, HH 1247.

This family's name was definitely RIVES; however, beginning with this generation the name variation REEVES begins to be used.
