On the 17th of March, 1862, Byrd J. Sutherlin enlisted as a private in Co. E of the 23rd Virginia Infantry Regiment of the CSA. One month later on 24 April 1862, he died of pneumonia at General Hospital #2 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
