Reading (Parish of St Giles), Berkshire


Location

St Giles, Reading is an Ancient Parish serving those parts of Reading to the south and east of the River Kennet. All three of Reading's parish churches are described in detail on pages 367-378 of A History of the County of Berkshire: Volume 3.

Parish Church

The Parish (CofE) Church is St Giles, Reading, which was extensively rebuilt in 1872-3 can be seen here on Google Street View.

Parish Registers

"A History of the County of Berkshire: Volume 3" (pub 1923) notes that the registers previous to 1812 are as follows
(i) all entries 1564 to 1599;
(ii) all entries 1599 to 1636;
(iii) baptisms 1636 to 1646, marriages and burials 1636 to 1644;
(iv) baptisms 1646 to 1787, marriages 1648 to 1754, burials 1648 to 1787 (at the end of this volume is an entry of all the deaths which occurred during the Plague);
(v) baptisms and burials 1788 to 1812;
(vi) marriages 1754 to 1771;
(vii) marriages 1771 to 1788;
(viii) marriages 1788 to 1803;
(ix) marriages 1803 to 1812.
There is also a churchwardens' account-book from 1518 to 1807.

Adjacent (Pre 1832) Parishes

To the east of St Giles lies the parish of Earley. To the south is Shinfield with both Burghfield and St Mary, Reading to the west. To the north is St Lawrence, Reading.
