Analysis done by Wesley Baker and others on this family indicate that this eldest James Reeve was the husband of Mary Purrier and father to this James. Mary's father William Purrier refers to "my Eldest Daughter, Mary Reeve" along with another daughter Martha Osman who would be the wife of Thomas Osman from the Osman Deposition. He additionally mentioned an Isaac Reeve "who now lives with me," "Thomas Terrill that Marryed my GrandDaughter, Mary Reeve," and "James Reeve, my GrandSonne, now living wth me" whom he appointed as administrator of his will. This James then would be the grandson of William Purrier and the administrator of the will.

In 1679, James granted some items to Thomas and Sarah Mapes as the executor of William Purrier's will. In 1682 James Reeves of Southold sold some land to Thomas Mapes Jr. In 1681, James was an overseer along with several others to represent Southold at a meeting in Huntington. In 1687, he and Theophilus Case exchanged some land, James receiving twenty-five acres. He and a Mary Reeves witnessed a deed in which William Reeve bought some land from Thomas Tusten. It's likely therefore that Mary was James's wife. All these items can be found in Southold town records.

James is listed in the 1675 and 1683 Southold Estimates for tax rates.

In the 1686 census of Southold, James's household is listed with five males and four females.

The probate of James's will states he died "ye 6 day of May 1698." The Salmon Records include an entry for a Reeve who was buried 7 May 1698.

By process of elimination, Baker found it likely that James's wife was the daughter Mary Reeves referred to in the 1671 will of Thomas Terry Sr.

Research Notes

This James was formerly conflated with his father James. See talk_NY_Southold_Area_Families for past and further analysis of the generations of James's and the connection to the Purrier family.
