Narrative

Nothing is presently known about Elizabeth's early life. nor when and where she married From the 1841 census she was NOT born in Hampshire.

It is probable she is the Elizabeth OTWAY who married Charles REEVES during September 1812 at the Parish Church of St Marylebone in London. (See Research Note 1 below).

Their first known son, William, was baptised on 29 September 1816 in the Parish Church of St Mary, Southampton at which time they lived on East Street.

Elizabeth's husband Charles died and was buried at the Parish Church of St Mary, Southampton in March 1826, when the family were living on King Street.

Known children of Elizabeth & Charles Reeves are
  1. William Reeves (c1816 HAM - 1833 HAM)
  2. Elizabeth Reeves (c 1819 HAM - )
  3. Israel James Reeves (c1821 HAM - 1901 HAM)
  4. Samuel Reeves (c1824 HAM - 1902 HAM)
Known child of Elizabeth Reeves and father unknown is

     5.  Matilda Reeves (c 1828 HAM - )

Probable child of Elizabeth Reeves and father unknown is

     6.  Edward Reeves (c1831 HAM - 1899 HAM)

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Elizabeth is head of household living on King Street in the Parish of St Mary, Southampton. She is noted as 45 years of age and was not "Born in same County" (that is to say not in Hampshire, but in England). Her occupation is recorded as "Laundress". The household comprises Elizabeth Reeves(age 20), I J Reeves(age 15, a Milk Boy), Samuel Reeves(age 15, a Labourer), Matilda Reeves(age 12) and Edward Reeves(age 10).

Elizabeth has not be identified on the 1851 or any subsequent census. On the 1851 census she is not found with any of her three surviving sons, nor with daughter Matilda. The fact that young Edward is lodging with his presumed elder brother Samuel might suggest their mother Elizabeth had died (or possibly remarried).

It is probable Elizabeth's is the death recorded in the GRO Index during the fourth quarter of 1841 in the Southampton Registration District, age 46 and that she was buried at the Parish Church of St Mary, Southampton on 17 November 1841.

Research Notes

(1) There is much circumstantial evidence to link Charles and Elizabeth to the marriage in Marylebone in 1812. See Research Note 1 on the page for Charles Reeves.
