Narrative

Edward Reeves, the son of John Reeves was baptised at the Parish Church of St Maurice, Winchester in Hampshire on 8 October 1790. From the HGS indices, it would seem probable Edward was the fourth of five siblings baptised at St Maurice. Neither FamilySearch nor the HGS indices notes the name of Edward's mother.

Edward married Jane RIDETT on 5 January 1826 at Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight in the County of Hampshire.

Known child of Edward Reeves & Jane (nee Ridett) is ....
  1. Mary Reeves, born c 1830 at Newport, Isle of Wight.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Edward appears in a family context, with Jane and Mary living on Sea Street, Newport, Isle of Wight. His occupation is given as a chair maker. He is shown as aged 50 and born in county (Hampshire).

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Edward is living on Melbourne Place, New Village, Carisbrooke in the Borough of Newport on the Isle of Wight. He is now a widower and Thomas RILEY (no known family connection) is lodging with Edward. Edward claims he was born in Winchester, Hampshire and that he is 59 years old. He was employed as a chair maker.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Edward as head of household on Melbourne Street on the borders between Carisbrooke and Newport. In addition to Edward, the household comprises his unmarried daughter Mary Ann and Mary Jane (aged 2 years) whose relationship is given as grand-daughter. Edward's age is recorded as 70 and place of birth is again Winchester, Hampshire.  He is still working as a chair maker.

Edward has not been identified on the 1871 census and FreeBDM records the death of an Edward Reeves in the third quarter of 1869, aged 79 within the Isle of Wight Registration District. The Isle of Wight Family History Society's index narrows the place to the Newport sub-district.
