Narrative

By the time of the 1861 census, Edward's father is deceased, but Edward does appear in a family context with his widowed mother Ann as head of household alongside his older brothers James and Richard. They are living on Piercy Street, Christ Church parish, West Bromwich.

On the 1871 census, Edward again appears in a family context, with his widowed mother Ann who is again the HoH on Wood Lane, West Bromwich. Also in the household are his older sister Mary (age 24) and older brother Richard (age 21). All three siblings are unmarried. The household additionally includes John Reeves (age 2) and James Reeves (age 6 months).       See Research Note 2 below.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Edward REEVES and Sarah MALLIN during 3q1877 in the West Bromwich Registration District. FamilySearch has a corresponding entry extracted from the marriage register of the parish church of St. Peter Greets Green, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.

Children of Edward Reeves and Sarah (nee MALLAN:
  1. Albert E. J.   Albert Ernest Isaac Reeves, b.reg. 4q1878
  2. Beatrice Eleanor Reeves, b.reg. 3q1880
  3. William Ernest Reeves, b.reg. 3q1882
  4. Sarah Reeves, b.reg. 1q1885
Probable child of Edward and Sarah (nee MALLIN) is
# Sarah Reeves, b.reg. 1q1885       See Research Note 1 below.

The births of Albert, Beatrice and William were recorded in the West Bromwich Registration District and that of Sarah in Chorley Registration District. The GRO index entry for each of the four births notes their mother's maiden name as MALLIN.

At the time of the 1881 census, Edward and his wife Sarah (nee MALLIN) are living at "Albion House", Bull Lane in the St Andrew's parish are of West Bromwich. He is 28 years of age and gives his place of birth as West Bromwich, Staffordshire. He claims he is a Clerk at (the) Brickworks. In addition to his wife Sarah are his son Albert E I Reeves (age 2) and daughter Beatrice E Reeves (8 months). The household is completed by Mary MALLIN (sister in law, age 15) who is employed as a Domestic Servant.

In 1891, his mother Ann is living with him and his brother Richard's family. Richard may have died by this time.
By the time of the 1891 census, the family have relocated to Railway Road. Withnell, Chorley, Lancashire. Edward is now described as a 36 year old widower, working as a Traveller (probably a Travelling Salesman) for Brickworks. In addition to his sons Albert EI Reeves (12) and William E Reeves (8) also present in the household are his widowed mother Ann Reeves, who is described as the Housekeeper and his three nephews, John Reeves (22), James Reeves (20) and Edward P Sheldon (18). Edward's daughter Beatrice E Reeves (10) was living in the adjoining household and is described as as a Domestic Servant.       See Research Note 4 below.

His son Albert E. J. Reeves was present at death.

Research Notes

(1)     There is currently no evidence to positively link possible daughter Sarah to this couple. FreeBMD has only one male Reeves marriage to a female MALLIN across the period 1870 to 1890, that of Edward and Sarah as noted above.     Daughter Sarah appears with her father Edward on the 1901 census.

(2)     Whilst John (age 2) and James (age 6 months) were described on the 1871 census as Ann's sons, making them Edward's younger brothers, this is felt to be highly improbable. On the 1881 census they are described as her grandsons which would make them Edward's nephews. On the 1891 census John & James are explicitly described as Edward's nephews.

(3)     It is possible grandson John is the son of Edward's sister Mary. The GRO Index has the birth registration of an individual named John Richard REEVES during the second quarter of 1868 in the West Bromwich Registration District. The mother's maiden name for this John Richard Reeves is indexed as "--", which is indicative of an unmarried mother.

(4)     There is nothing in the 1891 census entry to associate the three nephews with Richard Reeves. As noted in (3) above, nephew John might be the son of Edward's elder sister Mary.
Richard Reeves appears on the 1891 census in his now married sister and brother-in-law's household a few doors away (Page 20, Schedule 119)
