Narrative

Henry Reeves is the sixth of seven known children born to George REEVES and his wife Mary (nee THORN). His birth was registered in the Romsey and Mitchelmersh Registration District during the second quarter of 1839 and his mother's maiden name was recorded as THORN. Henry was baptised at the parish church, the Abbey Church of St Mary and St Ethelflaeda, Romsey in April 1839.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Henry appears in the household of his parents George & Mary Reeves in the parish of Romsey Extra, Hampshire. He was two years old and was born in county (Hampshire). He was the youngest of four children in his parent's household at that time.

At the time of the 1851 census on 30 March, Henry again appears in his parent's household in the hamlet of Lee in the parish of Romsey Extra. He is now recorded as being 12 years of age, was born at Romsey, Hampshire and he is working as an Agricultural Labourer. His younger brother William is the only other child present in the household.

A decade later and the 1861 census again shows Henry living with his parents and younger brother William at Lee in Romsey. Henry is 22 years of age and is now working as a Miller.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Henry REEVES and Harriet FORD during 3q1865. FamilySearch note the marriage took place during July 1865 at the Parish Church of St Boniface at Nursling, Hampshire.
The known children of Henry Reeves and Harriet (nee FORD) are
  1. Rosa Reeves, b.reg. 1868
  2. Alice Reeves, b.reg. 1871
  3. Kate Reeves, b.reg. 1874, d.reg. 1874
  4. Harry Reeves, b.reg. 1875
  5. Ellen Reeves, b.reg. 1879
  6. Fred Reeves, b.reg. 1882
In all instances the child's birth was registered in the Romsey Registration District and the mother's maiden name was recorded as FORD

On the 1871 census, Henry & Harriett (sic) were living in Nursling, Hampshire. Henry was then 32 years old, again claims birth in Romsey, Hampshire and was still working as a Miller. His wife Harriett (age 31 and born Nursling) and daughter Rosa (2, Nursling) completed the household.

At the time of the 1881 census, Henry & Harriett (sic) are again to be found in Nursling, Hampshire. Now 42 years old, he is working as a Market Gardener. Along with his wife Harriett (sic), the household comprises their four surviving children, Rosa (12), Alice (9), Harry (4) and Ellen (1). All four children were born in Nursling, suggesting the family hadn't move during the decade.

On the 1891 census, Henry and Harriet are living on Station Road, Nursling. Henry now claims to be 51 years of age and born in Romsey. He is again working as a Miller. The household comprises his wife Harriet (50, Nursling) plus their three youngest children; Harry (14, Nursling, a Miller), Ellen (10, Nursling, a Scholar) and Fred (9, Nursling, a Scholar).

By the time of the 1901 census Henry's wife Harriet is the head of household and describes herself as a widow. FreeBMD & the GRO Index note the death during the second quarter of 1899 in the Romsey Registration District of a Henry Reeves, age 60 which is a very strong match to our subject.
