Narrative

This best matches Henry son of George and Harriet Reeves living in Cam, Gloucestershire in 1841. In the household are George (33), Harriet (30), Charles (9), Henry (7), John (2), and N. K. Reeves (2 weeks). Research Note 1 below.

There is a baptism record for Henry from 20 Apr 1834, son of George and Harriett Reeves of Cam, Labourer. This would indicate his birth record from the census is probably off a year or two. The 1901 census stated he was born 5 Jan 1835.

Henry does not appear with his probable parents George and Harriet on the 1851 census at Cam, Gloucestershire. He is to be found at Hinton Tything in the parish of Berkeley, Gloucestershire. He is 17 years old, claims birth in Cam, Gloucestershire and is working as a Farm Servant. He is living in the household of John SMITH, a farmer of 60 acres - there is no family connect known at present.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Henry REEVES and Louisa NICHOLDS (sic) during the fourth quarter of 1855 in the Ross Registration District. (Note whilst her name on marriage is indexed as NICHOLDS, as recorded below, the surname NICHOL(L)S appears on most birth registrations.)
Children of Henry Reeves and Louisa Nicholds/Nichol(l)s:
  1. Harriett Reeves, b.reg. 1q 1856
  2. William Reeves, b.reg. 3q 1857 and d.reg. 3q 1857, age 0
  3. James Reeves, b.reg. 3q 1858
  4. Louisa Reeves, b.reg. 4q 1860
  5. George Reeves, b. c1863
  6. Ann Reeves, b.reg. 1q 1865
  7. Henry Reeves, b.reg. 4q 1867   —   probably known as Albert
  8. Albert Reeves, b. c1868 See Research Note 2 below.
  9. William Reeves, b. c1869 See Research Note 3 below.
  10. Millicent Reeves, b.reg. 1q 1870
  11. Sarah Reeves, r.reg. 1q 1871 and d.reg. 1q 1871, age 0
All of the birth registrations noted above were in the Ross Registration District and in each case the mother's maiden name is shown as NICHOLLS, with the exception of daughter Louisa, where the mmn is shown as NICHOLS (sic).

There are baptisms for the following in from Foy, Herefordshire, which fit well with the birth registrations noted above..
  • Harriet Reeves, bap. 23 Mar 1856, d/o Henry & Louisa
  • William Reeves, bap. 25 Aug 1857, s/o Henry & Louisa

In 1861, the family is listed in How Caple, Herefordshire with Henry age 27 born in Cam, Gloucester, wife Louisa age 25, and children Harriet (5), James (2), and Louisa (6mo).

In 1871, the family is listed in How Caple, Herefordshire with Henry age 40, ag Lab, born in Cam, Gloucester. With him are wife Louisa (38), and children: Harriett (15), James (13), George (8), Albert (3), Ann (6), and Milicent (1).

It is likely that Henry's wife Louisa died in 1871. The GRO Index to Deaths has an entry during 2q1871 in the Ross Reg.Dist. for a Louisa REEVES, age 33. Note her age on the 1871 census is recorded as 38, but on the 1861 census she was just 25, so her age being recorded as 33 at death isn't such a huge variation.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Henry REEVES and Emma MAXFIELD in the Ross Registration District during the third quarter of 1874.
At the time of her marriage to Henry, Emma had three surviving children from her marriage to the late George MAXFIELD. See Research Note 3 below. They were
  1. Isabel MAXFIELD, b.reg. 3q1862 in Hay Reg.Dist.
  2. Alice Ellen MAXFIELD, b.reg. 4q1864 in Ledbury Reg.Dist.
  3. William MAXFIELD (indexed as MARFIELD), b.reg. 4q1868 in Ross Reg.Dist.
All three births are shown with their mother's maiden name as being PEARCE. All three of Emma's children appear in some subsequent records using their step-father Henry's surname of REEVES.

Children of Henry Reeves and Emma (nee PEARCE and formerly MAXFIELD):
  1. Frederick Reeves, b. 21 Feb 1874 or 1875
  2. Arthur Frank Reeves, b.reg. 2q 1878
  3. Florence Reeves, b.reg. 2q1879 (30 Apr 1880)
  4. Edith Reeves, b.reg. 3q 1881
Again all of the birth registrations noted above were in the Ross Registration District and in each case the mother's maiden name is shown as PEARCE.

Although part of the enumeration book page is missing, there appears to be a household for Henry Reeves that matches this family in the 1881 census at Yatton, Herefordshire. It lists
    • [He]nry Reeves (45) Ag Labourer born in Cam, Glo(uce)stershire,
    • [Em]ma, wife, age 42, born in Buck's Amersham
    • [???]s Reeves, son age 22, born in How Caple, Herefordshire   —   a good match to James Reeves
    • a dau-in-law surnamed Maxfield age 18, born Clyro, Radnorshire   —   Isabel MAXFIELD
    • a son Reeves age 13 born in How Caple   —   Henry aka Albert Reeves
    • a son-in-law Maxfield age 12   —   William MAXFIELD
    • a Reeves daughter age 11 born in Yatton, Herefordshire   —   Florence Ellen Reeves
    • [???]k Reeves, son age 6, born in "Casselmorten" (sic Castlemorton), Worcestershire   —   Frederick Reeves
    • [???]k Reeves (presumably Arthur Frank), son age 3, born in Yatton, Herefordshire   —   (Arthur) Frank Reeves, and
    • [???]ce Reeves, daughter age 1, born in Yatton   —   Florence.
It's likely that the wife Emma was a second wife with surname Maxfield and the Maxfield children in the household are hers by a previous marriage.

Henry's obituary (shown in full below) states he "came to Canada in 1882 with his wife and children from his home in Hereford, England." They are listed on a ship passenger list for the ship Sarmatian which arrived 4 Jun 1882 in Quebec. Henry Reeves (47) is listed with wife Emma (43) along with Isabel (19), Ellen (17), Ann (16), Albert (14), William (13), Millisence? (12), Frederick (7), Florence (3), and Edith (1).   Note that there wasn't any Isabel and Ellen listed on this census as children previous to this so it's not clear who these are.

In 1891, he is found in Wallace, Selkirk, Manitoba in Canada with wife Emma and children Frederick (16), Frank (13), and Florence (12).

In 1901, he is listing in Miniota, Manitoba with wife Emma (62) and children Arthur F. (23) and Florence (21). The 1901 census lists the full birth dates as well.

In 1906, he was listed age 72 in Brandon, Manitoba with his wife Emma (age 69).

Henry died in September 1909 in the Rural Municipality of Wallace in the Province of Manitoba, according to information in his Probate file.

An obituary was posted to his Find A Grave profile:
DEATH OF HENRY REEVES
One of the Earliest Settlers of the District Passes Away
The many friends will learn with regret of the death of Henry Reeves one of the early settlers of the district who passed away at his residence in Two Creeks, on Tuesday morning last, at the ripe age of 75.
The deceased gentleman had been ailing for several months, so the end was not entirely unexpected. The late Mr. Reeves came to Canada in 1882 with his wife and children from his home in Hereford, England, and resided in Winnipeg until the spring of 1884, when he came to this district, settling on a farm belonging to the Rankin estate.
In 1890 he homesteaded the present farm, on which he lived up to the time of his death. Besides his widow, there survive him, four daughters, Mrs. Guinn of Zortman, Montana., Mrs. Rookes and Mrs. Powell of Estevan, Mrs. A Webster of Welwy, Sask, and five sons - Albert Reeves of Grand Forks, Montana, Fred and Frank of Two Creeks, and George and James, who are living in England.
The funeral services were held at the residence of the deceased yesterday (29th) and the remains were followed to Two Creeks Cemetery by a cortege of sorrowing friends.
Probate of Henry's estate was granted to his widow Emma in March 1911 and images of the Probate file are available from FamilySearch. The file includes a copy of Henry's will written in December 1908, in which his widow Emma is named as the primary beneficiary. It also names the following family members
  • James REEVES
  • Louisa POWELL
  • George REEVES
  • Albert Henry REEVES
  • William MAXFIELD
  • Anna Ellis Nilison ROOKS
  • Frederick REEVES
  • Arthur Frank REEVES and
  • Florence WEBSTER

Research Notes

(1) Henry's younger brother John is shown on the 1841 census as being 2 years old. This would fit well with the birth registration of John Reeves during 1q1839 in the Dursley Registration District, which includes the (civil) parish of CAM. John's mother's maiden name is shown as GOLDWORTHY. This in turn links back to the marriage of George REEVES and Harriet GOLDWORTHY at Malmesbury in Wiltshire.

(2) Henry's son Albert is shown on the 1871 census and subsequent returns. However there is no obvious birth registration in this name and it is suspected that son Henry became known as Albert, to avoid confusion with his father.

(3) Henry's second wife was Emma MAXFIELD (nee Pearce). FreeBMD notes the marriage of George MAXFIELD and Emma PEARCE during the fourth quarter of 1861 in the Hay Registration District.

Emma appears on the 1871 census as a widow, age 31 (so born c1840), who was born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. She and her family are living at Yatton Lodge Cottage Yatton, Herefordshire. In addition to Emma are a daughter Isabell (sic) who is recorded as being age 8, born Cliro, (sic Clyro), Radnorshire, a daughter Ellen, age 6, born Yarkhill, Herefordshire and a son, William age 2, born Yatton, Herefordshire. (See RG10 Piece 2685, Folio 7 reverse, Page 8, Schedule 7)

The GRO Index to Births and the GRO Index to Deaths note the following
  1. Isabel MAXFIELD, b.reg. during 3q1862 in Hay Reg.Dist.
  2. Alice Ellen MAXFIELD, b.reg. during 4q1864 in Ledbury Reg.Dist.
  3. George MAXFIELD, b.reg. during 4q1866 in Amersham Reg.Dist. and d.reg. 4q1870 in Ross Reg.Dist, age 4
  4. William MARFIELD (sic), b.reg. during 4q1868 in Ross Reg.Dist.
All four births are recorded with mother's maiden name of PEARCE
