John was born and lived in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina. John was educated in the Public Schools in Charleston and with Dr. Henry M. Burns School of Orangeburg, South Carolina. John served as a Lieutenant in The Army of Confederate States of America completing his tour of duty in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. As a civilian, John met his wife Mary Stone Bissell at St Paul's Church in Charleston where they both sang in the church choir. John worked in the Insurance and Banking business, mostly Insurance, where he served as President of State Savings Bank located at 255 King Street in Charleston, and Treasurer of Carolina Rice Company. John was Master of Orange Lodge Number 14 A and also President of the South Carolina Fire Insurance Agents Association and the Building and Loan Association. John enjoyed singing and he played the pipe organ. John died in 1931 and is buried in Magnolia Gardens Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina.

According to a Recording of an interview of son Harold "Dick" Stone Reeves, John and Mary had ten children, seven of which grew up and nine of which are listed in the Narrative.
