ASSASSINATED. - A man named Mal. Reeves, son-in-law of old man Lockwood, was assassinated at 2 o'clock Sunday morning, at his residence six miles north of Webberville. He and several children were sleeping on the gallery, and about 2 o'clock several parties hallooed and woke him up. When he arose they fired, and Reeves fell a dead man. About five years ago, it is said, Reeves and his brother killed a man and the brother left. Friends of the man they killed are suspected of assassinating Reeves. Some of the children sleeping on the gallery were powder burnt. Mrs. Reeves and other children were sleeping inside the house.

Research Notes

Based on Ancestry DNA test Group 2 DNA appears to be related to this family through his son James Thomas Reeves 1870-1945, son Lemeul Reeves 1908-1991.

For future research wonder if his father could be Ephraim Reeves son of Jonathan Reeves. Have a another ThruLines match to Johnathan's daughter and Ephraim sister Sarah Adaline Reeves - Group 2 DNA.

Mary Elizabeth (Bettie) Lockwood, wife of Malachi C. (Maul) Reeves had 3 husbands, all of whom died violent deaths.

Some family trees have James Thomas Reeves 1870-1945 father as Rev. Malachiah Reeves 1805-1843 and this does not appear to be correct. His father was Malachi C. (Maul) Reeves.

Some family trees have Reuben A Reeves as the father based on one census with his son's initials C.M. thinking could be Malachi. This is NOT correct.
