After his death at about age 35, his widow and children left Virginia and migrated to Tennessee in the mid 1840's. During the time they lived in Rutherford County, son Thomas Bird Reeves married and then moved further westward with the family to Gibson County, Tennessee.

Michell Hoskins Reeves and several of the children remained in Gibson County, TN where she died in 1878. By 1860 Thomas Bird Reeves had crossed the Mississippi River and settled in southeast Missouri in Dunklin County. A few years later, son Peter May Reeves left Gibson County to settle in Greene County, Arkansas, not far south of where his brother Thomas was living in Dunklin County, Missouri. During the last few years of his life, Peter also settled in Dunklin County.
