This Indenture made this Twentieth day of October in the fourteenth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God of great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith &c and in the year of our Lord Christ One thousand seven hundred & Seventy four Between William Rieves and Nelly his wife of the County of Sussex of the one part and John Stuart of Brunswick County of the other part witnesseth that he the said William Rieves & Nelly his wife for & in consideration of the sum of sixty pounds current money of Virginia to them in hand paid on or before the ensealing & delivery of these presents the receipt whereof the said William Rieves & Nelly his wife hath granted released & confirmed and by these presents doth sell grant release & confirm unto the said John Stuart his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract of land situate lying and being in the aforesaid County of Sussex on the south side of Nottoway River and on the hunting quarter swamp being the land & plantation whereon the said William Rieves now lives and containing by estimation two hundred acres be the same more or less and bounded as followeth to wit Beginning at a maple in the hunting quarter swamp thence by a line of Stith Parham's to a corner pine thence a straight to a pine of William Horns line thence by the said Horn's line to a corner sweet gum of William Hardays line thence by the said Hardays line to a pine in a small drain thence down the courses of the drain to the hunting quarter swamp thence down the various courses of the said swamp to the beginning And also all trees woods underwoods profits commodities advantages hereditaments ways waters & appurtenances whatsoever to the said tract or parcel of land belonging or in any wise appertaining to the same and all the reversion & reversions remainder & remainders rents & services of the said land & premises and of every part & parcel thereof and all the estate right title interest property claim & demand whatsoever of him the said William Rieves and Nelly his wife of in & to the said tract or parcel of land and premises and every part and parcel thereof To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land and all & singular the said premises above mentioned and every part & parcel thereof with the appurtenances unto the said John Stuart his heirs assigns forever and the said William Rieves and Nelly his wife for themselves their heirs and assigns the said tract of land & premises above mentioned and every part thereof against themselves their heirs & assigns shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents. In witness whereof the said William Rieves and Nelly his wife have hereunto set their hand & affixed their seals the day & year first above written.

The within written indenture was acknowledged by the thereto subscribed William Rieves & Nelly his wife to be their act & deed and by the court ordered to be recorded previous to which the said Nelly was privily & apt from her said Husband examined and did freely & voluntarily relinquish her right of dower of in & to the land & premises conveyed by the said indenture.

Commentary

It is not clear who this William is. There is no William with wife Nelly mentioned in Reliques of the Rives. The land mentioned is next to land of Stith Parham. A deed from the previous year from John Adams to Robert Rieves mentions Stith Parham as well. Stith Parham (the younger) was the son-in-law of George Rives.
