Transcript

This Indenture made this Six day of September in the year of our Lord Christ One thousand seven hundred and Ninety three Between Nathaniel Epps Moses Epps David Powell Senr John Comer Edy Epps and Temperance Epps of the County of Halifax Ambrose Grisham of Lunenburg County and George Reeves of Wilks (sic) County in North Carolina of the one part and William Epps of the aforesaid County of Halifax of the other part Witnesseth that they the said Nathaniel Epps Moses Epps David Powell Senr Jno Comer Edy Epps and Temperance Epps of the aforesaid County of Halifax and Ambrose Grisham of Lunenburg County and George Reaves of Wilks (sic) County in North Carolina they being Legatees of John Epps deceased for and in consideration of the Sum of One hundred pounds warrant money of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said William Epps at and before the unsealing and Delivery of these presents the Receipt whereof they doth hereby Acknowledge hath given granted bargained and Sold and do by these presents give grant bargain and Sell unto the said William Epps and to his heirs and Assigns forever a Certain Tract or parcel of Land Situate lying and being in the aforesaid County of Halifax and the South Side of Banester River Containing by Estimation forty Acres be the same more or less and bounded by the Lands of Evan Ragland Junr. and on Banester River together with all priviledges and appurtenances Rights Issues and profits of the said Land and to the Same belonging or in any wise Appertaining with the Reversion and Reversions Remainder and Remainders of the said Land and every part and parcel thereof. To have and to hold the said Tract or parcel of Land with the premises thereunto belonging unto the said William Epps his heirs and Assigns forever And the aforesaid Legatees for themselves and their heirs doth Covenant with the said William Epps that they the said Legatees the aforesaid Land with the Appurtenances unto the sd. William Epps and his heirs against the title claim and demand of them the said Legatees and their Heirs and against all persons Claiming by from or under them or any of them shall and will warrant and forever defend In Witness whereof We the said Legatees have to these presents set our hands and Affixed our Seals the day & year above written ~

The within Indenture was Acknowledged by Ambrose Grisham and Proved by the Witnesses thereto Subscribed to be the Act and Deeds of all the list of the parties thereto Subscribed and Ordered to be Recorded

Commentary

George Reeves is named as a legatee in the above deed which lists other heirs of Joshua Epps and his father John Epps. George's wife Martha "Patty" was a daughter of Joshua Epps who was deceased circa 1778 and his children were legatees in his father John's will.
