Transcript

This Indenture made this Nineteenth day of August one thousand eight hundred and nine, by and between Peter Reves of the County of Halifax & State of Virginia of the one part and John Shotwell of the Same County & State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the Sum of one Hundred and Seventy five pounds Currant money of Virginia aforesaid to the Said Peter Reves in hand paid by the Said John Shotwell at or before the Sealing and delivering hereof the receipt whereof he the Said Peter Reves doth hereby Acknowledge and thereof doth acquit and discharge the Said John Shotwell, his heirs Executors & and every of them by these presents he the Said Peter Reves for himself his heirs Executors & hath given, granted, bargained, Sold, Released, Enfeoffed and Confirmed unto the Said John Shotwell, a Certain Tract or parcel of land containing by a late Survey one hundred & Seventy five Acres, Situate lying & being in the County of Halifax afore Said on both Sides of Bradley Creek and contained within the bounds and limits herein after mentioned ToWit) Beginning at William Carr’s corner white oak in Cobbs line thence along Cobbs line South 35 degrees West Sixty eight poles to pointers thence along Kerby’s line the Same Course contained the whole line 207 poles Crossing Two Small Branches to 3 pines on a path, thence South Fifty one Degrees West 86 poles to a pine, West 96 poles to a corner on the edge of an old field, thence along Abbotts line North 22 Degrees East 164 poles to a forked poplar on a Branch, thence North 63 Degrees West Sixty eight poles Crossing the Creek to a pine, thence along Oneals line North Eighty Two poles to pointers, thence along William Carr’s line South 70 Degrees East Sixty Six poles crossing the Said Creek near the mouth of a Branch and up the Said Branch as it meanders 106 poles to a fore and aft post oak at the head thereof, thence a chopt (sic?) line South 68 Degrees East Thirty Two poles to the beginning To have & to hold the before granted land & premises unto the Said John Shotwell his heirs & assigns forever and the said Peter Reaves (sic) do hereby covenant, promise and agree that he the Said Peter Reves his heirs Executors etc the before granted & bargained land & premises unto the Said John Shotwell his heirs Executors etc against him the Said Peter Reves & his heirs etc Will warrant & forever defend. In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and affixed my Seal the day & date first herein written…

At a Court held for Halifax County the 23th Day of September 1809
                    The Within Written Indenture was Acknowledged by the within named Peter Reaves (sic) party thereto to be his Act and Deed. And Anne his wife after being first privily Examined According to Law Came into Court and Freely & Voluntarily relinquished her right of Dower in and to the lands Conveyed by the Said Indenture all which was ordered to be Recorded.
