State of North Carolina } Court of Pleas & Quarter SessionsBrunswick County } December Term 1842
To the worshipful Justices of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions for the County aforesaid:
The Petition of Mary A. Reaves, George Ward & wife Rachel and John Reaves respectfully showeth that some time in the year George Reaves of aforesaid county died intestate leaving your first named Petitioner his widow and the others his children who together with Caroline Reaves, Joseph Reaves, Patricia Reaves and Adeline Reaves are the distributees and next of Kin of said George Reaves deceased - the four last named persons being minors - the said George Reaves at the time of his death was possessed of and had title to the following negro slaves viz. Hannah Nancy Jinny & her infant child, Charlotte, Nicey, Charly & William - The prayer of your Petitioners is that a fair and equal division of said slaves may be made and that the slaves to which your Petitioners are entitled be allotted to them. To that end that proper & suitable persons may be appointed to make said division & return their report thereof under their hands and seals to the next Term of this Court. Further that N. Potter the Clerk of this Court be appointed guardian ad litem of the above named minors to protect their interest in said division - and your Petitioners as in duty bound &c
