New York Times - McAplin, John William not Reeves, George Marmaduke

1856 NY Times - Impersonation

The New York Times of 24 November 1856

The New York Times of 24 November 1856 reported the Court of General Sessions on Nov, 22 (1856).

"Lieutenant-Colonel George Marmaduke Reeves, alias John William McAplin, the gentleman who represented himself as an agent of the British Army, sent to this country to purchase for British use rifles to the value of USD800,000 was brought into Court and discharged, no witnesses appearing against him. The Lieutenant-Colonel has a fine military figure, and is what the young ladies would denominate a very splendid man."

Commentary

It is presumed this George Marmaduke REEVES is indeed an imposter. Need to cross reference to George's military career and see where he was serving in 4q1856.

From a subsequent story also in The NY Times (February 21, 1860 at http://www.nytimes.com/1860/02/21/news/law-reports-general-sessions-trial-thomas-thompson-ellis-md-for-grand-larceny.html, it would seem this was indeed an imposer and not the British Army Officer George Marmaduke REEVES
