I have been doing family tree research for over 40 years. My father's sister was the last researcher, and after she passed, everyone got a copy of her research. My father showed interest, but really was too busy. This was before home computers were a big thing. Before Windows. I finally got started during DOS and had a wonderful software program through Banner Blue, I think it was called. It changed names over the years and was finally bought out by Ancestry.com. I admit I hated all the changes.
I was researching the whole family and started becoming familiar with the various names. Rives/Ryves was one of them on my father's mother's side. I remember thinking it was a funny spelling of Reeves, or was it Rivers? It took quite a while to learn anything. Along with updated software came home DNA test kits. Things kind of exploded. Also more research libraries were becoming online! We kind of got a little lazy not leaving our computers. I got married the second time in 1997, and my new husband was just as interested in genealogy. We actually visited cemeteries, older relatives, and the Pennsylvania State Archives on our honeymoon. We would get excited about death certificates arriving in the mail! One of my cousins was also into genealogy and helped on my mother's side. She and computers did not get along, so she went to the libraries there and researched land records and court documents. She found much that never made it to a computer. We are so thankful for her efforts.
So you see it often has been a collaborative effort. I've made friends with newly discovered cousin researchers and we share what we find, maybe argue a little over different takes on things. It has been fun!
I'm looking forward to learning what I can about our Rives/Ryves ancestry through this group. Thank you for letting me join.
