In Yadkin County, North Carolina, Mathew John Crews enlisted in Company B, North Carolina 21st Infantry Regiment on 12 May 1861.Mustered out on 26 Apr 1862, and transferred into Company A, North Carolina 1st Sharp Shooter Battalion of the CSA.

After Mathew returned from service in the Civil War, he moved with his family first to McLean, Illinois where they are recorded in the 1870 census and by 1880 they were found in Ringgold, Iowa. In the 1880 census Mathew was a widower with several of his youngest children still in his household.
