Research Notes

¹DOB is questionable. Numerous sources list her DOB as 1 Aug 1824 and after her marriage to William Daniel, most census records give a DOB of 1825. However, Virginia, Deaths and Burials Index, 1853-1917 database lists her birth as about 1834. Samuel Phipps, Jr. was born 12 Sep 1813 and was much younger than Grace Doughton. He would only have been 11 years of age if Eliza Jane was born in 1824. It also appears from the Ashe County deed records in which the heirs of Joseph Doughton were conveying property to some of the heirs that Grace was not married in 1832 when these transactions were taking place. In each deed by the heirs of Joseph Doughton from Ashe County Deed Book V written in 1832, she is named in the body of the deed as Grace Doughton and there is no husband listed as it is for her married sisters and she also signed her name Grace Doughton not Phipps.
