There is very little record of Waters M. Dunn, Jr. other than what is found in the probate records and estate files of his father, Waters M. Dunn, Sr., and the 1835 will of his grandmother Winifred Dunn. He is possibly the Waters Dunn recorded on the same page with his brother Gatewood S. Dunn of the 1840 census of Columbia County, Georgia although the age listed is questionable.

In that 1840 census, it also appears that his wife is deceased as only females in the household are two children under 10 years of age along with several older male children who was possibly Waters' orphaned younger siblings.

The 1864 Census for Re-Organizing the Georgia Militia lists a W. M. Dunn, age 54 years, 8 months, a farmer born in Georgia.
