The census pieces typically coincide with the Civil Registration Districts. However, West Ham registration District is covered by two pieces of the 1851 census, this piece 1768 and by piece 1769.

For further information, please see West Ham Registration District at UKBMD.

Piece 1768 includes the following parishes East Ham, Little Ilford and West Ham. Reflecting its urban growth, the Ancient Parish of West Ham had been subdivided and two Ecclesiastical Parishes were created in 1844, Plaistow St Mary, Stratford St John, both having previously been Chapels of Ease to All Saints, West Ham.
