For additional general information about Winchester, please see Wikipedia:Winchester.

Note Winton is an archaic name for Winchester, sometimes used within census enumerations in the place of birth column.

The village of Winkton, south of Ringwood and north of Christchurch was sometimes referred to as Winton on old maps etc.
Additionally there is an area within Bournemouth (originally Hampshire, but Dorset since 1974) which became known as Winton some time after 1850. See http://www.wintonforum.co.uk/maps.html# and http://www.wintonforum.co.uk/victorianvision.html

The city is described in some detail in A History of the County of Hampshire: Volume 5 at British History Online with the first 80 pages being devoted to the City and various aspects thereof.
