Narrative
John L. Geer and Mary Wright married in Greene County, Georgia in 1838 and continued to live there through 1842 when Mary, the second of their children was born. By 1844 when son William was born, the family was living in Mississippi where they are recorded in the 1850 census in Noxubee, Mississippi.They were not listed in the 1860 census but were living in Texas by the 19th of July 1862 when John, age 46, enlisted in the 29th Texas Cavalry of the CSA in Clarksville, Texas as a substitute for J. K. Boykin. On the same date, his oldest son, William, also enlisted in the 29th Texas Cavalry.
Neither John nor William Geer is listed among those known killed in action with the 29th Texas, but by 1870 William's wife was listed in the census as a widow and there are no further records of John L. Geer. In 1880, Mary Geer, a widow, and several of their children are found living in Red River, Texas.
