William J. Gill is listed in the household of his parents in the 1850 and 1860 census.
On 15th Feb 1856, John Gill deeded to William J. Gill, his son, 50 acres on the west side of the road leading to Parkers Bridge in Wake County which was part of the tract of land given to John Gill by his father Jesse Gill. Recorded in Wake County Deed Book 21, Page 80.
William J. Gill enlisted in Company D, North Carolina 30th Infantry Regiment of the CSA on the 10th of August 1861 with the rank of Sergeant. He was promoted to Full 3rd Lieutenant on 10 Mar 1862 and held the rank of 2nd Lieutenant at the time of his death on 13 Oct 1862 at Frederick, Maryland. He is on a register of officers and soldiers of the Confederate States who were killed in battle or who died of wounds or disease.
