Hancock County, IN


History

Hancock county was cut off from Madison and organized in 1828. It was named in honor of John Hancock, president of the continental congress of 1775 and signer of the Declaration of Independence.

At the time of the organization of the county it contained few inhabitants and they were scattered. At the first presidential election held in the county on November 3, 1828, the whole number of votes cast was 101.

Modern Day Adjacent Counties

Hancock County is bordered by Madison, Henry, Rush, Shelby, Marion and Hamilton counties.
