Fleming Co., KY

Fleming County, KY

History

Fleming County was the twenty-sixth formed in Kentucky, established in 1798 from part of Mason County in the northeastern portion of the state. In 1800 Floyd County was formed from Fleming as was Rowan County in 1856.

The county was named for Col. John Fleming who traveled down the Ohio River by canoe in 1776 with his half-brother Major George Stockton of Virginia and was among the first explorers here. From the time he was an infant until he became an adult, Major Stockton was held captive by the Indians of New York. When he returned to "civilization" in Virginia, he was so accustomed to the lifestyle of the Indians that he grew discontent in Virginia and sought to make his home in the wilderness of Kentucky. Both Col. Fleming and Major Stockton built forts in the area of Flemingsburg as did another early settler Michael Cassidy.
