History
Waldo County is the eleventh most populous of the sixteen counties, located in mid-coast Maine, and was formed on July 3, 1827 from portions of Hancock, Kennebec, and Lincoln counties.Several adjustments were made in the 19th century, resulting in the current boundary containing the City of Belfast and the towns of Belmont, Brooks, Burnham, Frankfort, Freedom, Islesboro, Jackson, Knox, Liberty, Lincolnville, Monroe, Montville, Morrill, Northport, Palermo, Prospect, Searsmont, Searsport, Stockton Springs, Swanville, Thorndike, Troy, Unity, Waldo, Winterport.
The county contains a deep-water port on Sears Island in Searsport and a historic fort at Fort Point State Park on Cape Jellison in Stockton Springs. Its eastern boundary is defined by the Penobscot River from Winterport to Penobscot Bay.
The City of Belfast is the County Seat, hosting the county government, courthouse, and the county jail.
