Curtis is found in the 1850 census in the household of his mother, Nancy and her second husband James Alderson. The children of Nancy's first marriage to John May are incorrectly listed as Alderson or Allison in that census.

By the 1860 census, his mother Nancy Alderson appears to be a widow for she is the head of household. Curtis is listed in Nancy's household in that census as a farm laborer but again incorrectly listed as Curtis Alderson.

No further records have been found of Curtis May.
