Bertie Co., NC

Bertie Co., NC

Settlers continued to push westward across the Chowan River to the banks of the Roanoke and both sides of Fishing Creek. Settlements extended so far that it became necessary to establish a new governmental precinct within Albemarle County. In 1722 Bertie precinct was formed from Chowan. The new precinct, called Bertie, contained all the territory west of the Chowan River, the lands to the east remaining in Chowan Precinct.

Edgecombe precinct was cut off from Bertie in 1732 with the Roanoke as the boundary, but not formally established until 1741. Counties that were originally within Bertie Precinct are Tyrell, Edgecombe, and Northampton. Later Granville, Halifax, Nash and Wilson were formed in part or in whole from Edgecombe.
